For a long time I’ve wanted to publish a book about how teachers made a difference in the lives of their students; because I know they made a difference in mine!
I grew up in Trenton, Tennessee, a small town of 5,000 people. I have wonderful memories of those first 18 years. And during those years there were two teachers who I can say, with certainty, helped to make me who I am today.
The first was Ms. Bridges who taught me in the 4th grade. She was amazing! I’ll never forget her beautiful smile and her passion for teaching. She made learning so much fun and made all of us feel like we could do anything we wanted to do. The positive seeds she planted in my head are still growing!
Then there was Fred Culp, my history teacher in high school. To this day, he is still the funniest person I’ve ever met. In addition to loving his history class, he taught me that a sense of humor, especially laughing at yourself, can be one of life’s greatest blessings.
So if you’re a teacher, or if, like me, your life was greatly influenced by a teacher, you’re going to love this movie! The beautiful poem, The Heart of a Teacher, was written by Paula Fox. The combination of words, music and photographs is a “wow” that you won’t soon forget!
So to honor any teacher in your life who has made a difference, don’t forget to forward this to everyone you know.

Linda Ellis has mastered the art of communicating the Simple Truths of Life. Her beautiful poem, The Dash, has only 239 words, but truly captures why we’re here on this earth in an unforgettable way. Simple Truths has sold over 300,000 copies of The Dash, and it has made its way around the world as over 30 million people have watched our three-minute movie version of the “Dash movie” on the internet.
That’s why we’re proud to bring Linda’s talent back with her second book titled, Simple Truths of Life. It’s a wonderful collection of stories, great quotes and of course, Linda’s original poems that present the simple truths of life in a way that you won’t soon forget! Today I’d like to share one of her stories that I loved called…Dash of Hope. Enjoy!
Excerpt from:
Simple Truths of Life,
by Linda EllisDash of Hope
My poem, The Dash, is based on that little line on a tombstone, between the dates of birth and death. Ultimately, that dash is a symbol which represents every day we’ve spent alive on earth. Therefore, how you spend your “dash” is all that really matters. Following is an amazing story about someone whose dash truly made a difference.
Recently I heard about a little girl named Hope Stout. After learning more about her life, I couldn’t help but feel it was not by coincidence, nor happenstance, that she had been named “Hope.” It had to be attributed to fate. The compassion and generosity housed in her young heart made a lasting impression on me and countless others, and her legacy of love continues to bless lives every day. Though I never had the opportunity to meet her, I wish I had. It seems as though she was wise beyond her tender years and very, very special. When I tell people her story, I always say, “if this doesn’t inspire you, I don’t think there’s much that could…”
Hope was a twelve-year old girl who was offered a “wish” in early December 2003 by the “Make-A-Wish” Foundation after being informed that she had a rare type of bone cancer. However, when she found out that more than 150 children in her area were waiting for their wishes to be granted, she unselfishly used her wish to ask that those children have their wishes granted. She also asked that it be done by January 16, 2004. Unfortunately, however, the organization informed her that her noble request could not be granted as the funds were simply unavailable. They calculated that they would need to raise more than one million dollars in thirty days in order to grant her wish. Disappointed, but not discouraged, she turned her dismay into an enthusiasm that inspired caring individuals to spearhead fundraising to help grant the wishes of the other children, and eventually hers as well. Newspaper columnists and reporters for radio and TV stations shared the story of this caring young girl who had touched the hearts of so many and as word spread, the community was challenged. Committees were formed and schools, corporations and various organizations assisted in raising money to help bring Hope’s dream to fruition.
Though she lost her battle in 2004, knowing that her wish was going to come true, Hope lives on. Her heartfelt efforts were not in vain as they continue to help others, not only physically, but spiritually and emotionally as well. At the initial fundraiser and gathering to celebrate her life, “A Celebration of Hope” on January 16, 2004, the announcement was made that they had indeed received donations totaling more than one million dollars on behalf of Hope Stout. Her wish had been granted!
Simple Truths of Life is a beautiful book that will make an inspiring gift for anyone you know. It’ll be a gift that keeps on giving for years to come!

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” -Winston Churchill
I noticed that it can be pretty hard to stay optimistic in the face of difficulty. I don’t know about you, but it’s like a slippery slope for me. One or two bad things happen at the beginning of my day, and that colors my perception of the rest of the events that happen for that day. On the other side of the coin, though, I only need a couple good things (or to have a good attitude about a couple bad things), and my day picks up from there.
When I was a teenager, my parents bought a copy of Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul for me from a neighborhood yard sale. Talk about a deal of a lifetime! I read the entire book cover to cover in two days, and subsequently read each story multiple times after that. Those stories didn’t just help me understand how to celebrate life, but also aided me in coping with difficulties.
I have a short clip from Jack Canfield, the author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books, that I’d like to share with you today. He’s one of my personal heroes, so when I came across this video on Youtube, I couldn’t keep it to myself. I hope you enjoy it half as much as I did!

We’ve talked before (a while back) about thinking about and setting life goals
But I’d like to hear from all of you — what are your top life goals, what are your dreams, what [...]
We’ve talked before (a while back) about thinking about and setting life goals:
- Think about your life goals
There’s never a good time to sit down and think about what you want to accomplish in life. We have busy lives, and even when we’re not busy, we might just feel more like vegging in front of the TV or checking our feeds than thinking about the rest of our lives.
Do it today, if you haven’t yet. It could take as little as 10 or 20 minutes, and it could make all the difference in the world.
And it’s not that hard. You probably already have a good idea of what you want to do, but you may not have it written down. Or maybe you’ve done this exercise before, but you haven’t updated your goals for awhile. Now’s the time to do it.
1. How to start? First, think about what you’d like people to say about you at your funeral. This comes from Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People — the habit called “Begin with the end in mind.” It’s also very effective. Imagine you are at the end of your life, looking back. What would you like to have accomplished? What kind of person would you like to have been?
Now here’s the key: start living your life so that you will eventually get to that point.
2. Now that you’ve given that a little thought, jot down some ideas for life goals you’d like to achieve before you die.
They can be in many areas, but here are a few to start with: professional, education, family, spiritual, travel, recreation, hobbies, community, charity. You can probably think of more, and you don’t need to have goals in all of these areas. Just some topics to get you started.
3. Refine your list, or expand it. After your initial brainstorm, you may want to trim it down. But you may also want to expand: sometimes it’s fun, and worthwhile, to dream big.
4. Now break it down. What should you accomplish in the next 10 years for each of these goals? How about 5 years? How about two years? One year? And this month?
Once you’ve planned out each goal for 10-year, 5-year, 2-year, 1-year and 1-month periods, you’ve got yourself a pretty solid plan.
5. Take action! I like to take my monthly goals, and make a to-do list for this week. What can I do today to further my goals? And if I can get just one thing done, I’ve done a lot to make those dreams a reality!
Take a step towards your dreams today by writing them down, and making a plan.
But I’d like to hear from all of you — what are your top life goals, what are your dreams, what is your mission in life?
If you haven’t given this much thought, or haven’t thought about it in awhile, there’s no better time than the present!
So here’s today’s reader question:
What are your top 3 life goals?

William James, one of the founders of modern psychology said this:
“The deepest principle of human nature is a craving to be appreciated.”
I couldn’t agree more, and in fact, we never know when a few kind words can change a life forever.
That’s what The Simple Truths of Appreciation is all about. You’ll find great stories and great ideas about how to make family members, and members of your team, feel valuable and appreciated. You’ll discover ways you can make a difference; thus, make the world a better place to live.
Today, I’d like to share an unforgettable story about the power of appreciation. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did!
Excerpt from
The Simple Truths of Appreciation,
by Barbara GlanzMy friend, Bob Danzig, has an amazing story. Simple words of appreciation and encouragement changed his life. Bob was in five foster homes during his youth, and said he spent his childhood trying to find someone to love and appreciate him.
When he was nine years old, he had a new social worker. He said after she had done all the paperwork to move him to yet another foster home, she sat him down, looked him directly in the eyes, and said, “Bobby, I want you to always remember these words: YOU ARE WORTHWHILE!”
Bob says that no one had ever said anything like that to him, and each time they met, she repeated those words. They became an affirmation of appreciation that he heard over and over again in his head.
Bob graduated at sixteen, not because he was smart, he says, but because he got mixed up in the system!
He soon took a job at the Albany New York Times as a copy boy, and his very first boss was a woman named Margaret. After he had worked there about six months, Margaret called him into her office one day and asked him to sit down. He thought for sure he was going to be fired! She looked him right in the eyes and said to him, “I have been the office manager for 15 years – I have been observing you – and I believe YOU ARE FULL OF PROMISE.” Those words, on that day, gave him permission to aspire.
Those two positive messages of appreciation played over and over again in his head and ultimately gave him the courage to be the very best he could be. Sixteen years later he became the Publisher of the Albany New York Times, and seven years after that, he became CEO of Hearst Newspapers, one of the largest newspaper companies in the world; and he credits it all to those simple words of appreciation and love. What a wonderful example of how little gifts of appreciation can make such a difference in a life!
I love stories that our hearts can appreciate and this is one of many in this great little book!
The Simple Truths of Appreciation makes a great gift for any occasion, but especially to thank someone by saying…I appreciate you!
