Everyone is familiar with the Subway Diet featuring Jared, the guy who lost 245 pounds in a year by walking and replacing two meals a day with Subway sandwiches. This article goes into details about how the commercials and the famous diet got their start.
Like man college students Jared Fogle worked a part time job, his at an adult book store, to pay for college. His weight reached 425 pounds thanks to sitting around all day – in class and at work – munching on snacks. Jared realized his weight was critical and so started looking for a way to drop some pounds.
He tried various diets, but they didn’t work because he still had all those hours behind a counter during which to cheat. One day he noticed a Subway sandwich store about a mile and a half from his apartment. Unknown to Jared he was about to take his first step towards the Subway diet. Jared decided to skip breakfast every day, walk the mile and a half there and back to Subway for both lunch and dinner during which he consumed only a sandwich, a bag of baked chips and a diet soft drink. Now instead of a 10,000 calorie per day with no exercise lifestyle, he was eating only about 900 calories while walking 6 miles every day. For Jared the yet named Subway diet made 245 pounds disappear in the span of a single year.
How did this Subway diet become a national ad campaign for the Subway chain? After losing the weight Jared ran into a friend who worked with the school paper. He didn’t recognize Jared at first, and when he heard the weight loss story decided to write an article about it. Men’s Health magazine picked up the story as part of an article about weird diets that work. When a Chicago Subway owner read the story he contacted his advertising agency about making it into an ad. They took the ad idea to Subway’s national ad agency who disliked the idea, so they created a local campaign for Chicago featuring the Subway diet.
The campaign around the Subway diet became huge. It was a natural for Chicago based Oprah to feature Jared and his Subway diet on her popular national show. Now it was the national agency’s turn to ask about running the ads around the country.
The Subway diet has worked for a lot of people. But keep in mind that Jared’s extreme program of calorie cutting and extreme weight loss are, in general, potentially dangerous. His plan of cutting calories and exercise are well known to lead to weight loss and a healthy life style.
